Getting involved with the Olbiil Era Kell (OEK) offers citizens an opportunity to take part in Palau’s democratic process and contribute to the nation’s progress. The OEK encourages public participation, dialogue, and partnership with communities to ensure that legislation reflects the will and wisdom of the people.
Participate in Public Hearings
The Senate and the House of Delegates regularly hold public hearings on major bills and policy issues. These hearings allow citizens, traditional leaders, business owners, and community organizations to share their views directly with lawmakers.
Notices of hearings are announced in advance through the OEK website, radio, and public postings. Written statements or testimony may also be submitted for the official record.
Submit Petitions and Suggestions
Citizens may submit petitions, proposals, or suggestions to the OEK for consideration. These can address community concerns, propose amendments to existing laws, or recommend new legislation. Petitions may be delivered to either chamber’s Clerk’s Office or sent electronically through the official OEK contact channels.
Attend Open Sessions
Most sessions of the OEK are open to the public, allowing citizens to observe debates, votes, and proceedings. Attending a session provides an opportunity to see how the legislative process works and how elected representatives deliberate on national issues. Seating is available in designated public galleries within the National Capitol.
Join Educational and Civic Programs
The OEK, through its Public Information Offices and the Palau Congress Library, offers educational tours, workshops, and civic engagement programs. These activities are designed to help students, youth groups, and community members understand how laws are made and how they can participate in governance.
Programs include:
- Guided tours of the National Capitol and legislative chambers
- School visits and civic education talks
- Youth leadership and democracy workshops
- Internships and volunteer opportunities for students and graduates
Engage Through Media and Communication
Citizens can stay informed about legislative developments through press releases, newsletters, and radio broadcasts managed by the OEK Public Information Offices. Feedback from the public is welcomed through email, social media platforms, and community forums organized by the legislature.
Participate in Consultation Forums
From time to time, the OEK organizes national or state-level consultation forums on key topics such as environmental protection, cultural preservation, health, and economic development. These events allow citizens to engage directly with lawmakers and contribute ideas for shaping policy.
Volunteer and Internship Opportunities
The OEK offers internship and volunteer placements for students and young professionals interested in government service. Participants gain practical experience in legislative research, public communication, or administrative support while contributing to the institution’s work.
