The Senate Committee on Infrastructure and Public Services of the Olbiil Era Kell (OEK) has announced the launch of a formal inquiry into the escalating costs of inter-island transportation across Palau’s 16 states.
The investigation aims to examine factors contributing to higher fuel prices, limited vessel availability, and maintenance challenges that have increased travel expenses for both passengers and cargo. The Committee will also explore sustainable solutions such as fuel subsidies, modernization of state-owned vessels, and potential private-sector partnerships.
Committee Chair Senator Rina Ederang stated, “For many of our citizens, sea transport is not a luxury — it’s a necessity. We must understand why the cost of travel between our islands continues to rise and what can be done to make it fair and affordable.”
Public hearings are scheduled to begin later this month, with testimony invited from boat operators, logistics companies, fuel distributors, and state officials. The findings are expected to guide new legislation aimed at improving maritime connectivity and ensuring equitable access to essential services for all Palauans.
