The President of the Senate, Hon. Isobel Tmetuchl, formally welcomed delegates from across the Pacific region to Palau for the opening of the 2025 Pacific Legislative Summit, an annual forum aimed at fostering collaboration among island legislatures on issues of governance, sustainability, and regional security.
In her opening address, President Tmetuchl highlighted the shared challenges facing Pacific nations, including climate resilience, ocean governance, and digital transformation. “Our voices are strongest when we act together,” she said. “This summit is a testament to our collective will to build a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable Pacific future.”
The three-day summit, held at the Ngerulmud Conference Center, gathers parliamentarians from 14 Pacific Island countries and territories, along with representatives from the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Sessions will focus on strengthening parliamentary transparency, advancing renewable energy initiatives, and promoting gender balance in legislative leadership.
Speaker of the House of Delegates Kione Sakuma noted that the event “marks a new chapter in Pacific cooperation, where legislatures play a proactive role in shaping policy that directly affects island communities.”
The OEK will host a cultural evening and site visits to Palau’s conservation areas, showcasing the country’s commitment to sustainable development and traditional stewardship of natural resources.
