Palau’s National Congress honored fishermen for leading sustainable practices and advancing the nation’s Blue Prosperity Commitment.

Members of the Olbiil Era Kell (OEK) gathered today at the Palau National Capitol Rotunda to honor local fishermen for their outstanding contributions to sustainable and responsible fishing practices under the nation’s “Blue Prosperity Commitment.”

The ceremony, hosted by the Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Environment in partnership with the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, recognized 12 individual fishermen and three community cooperatives that have demonstrated leadership in marine conservation, reef-friendly techniques, and support for Palau’s no-take zones.

Senate President Isobel Tmetuchl praised the awardees, noting, “Palau’s fishermen are not only providers of food and livelihood — they are guardians of our ocean. Their actions ensure that our reefs and fisheries will remain abundant for generations to come.”

Honorees received certificates of recognition and commemorative plaques made from locally crafted wood. Among those recognized was Captain Taro Ngirai, who transitioned his fleet to solar-assisted engines and trained young apprentices in sustainable net use.

House of Delegates Speaker Kione Sakuma added, “This ceremony reminds us that conservation and community prosperity are deeply connected. By celebrating our local heroes, we affirm Palau’s commitment to a balanced and sustainable blue economy.”

The OEK announced that beginning next year, the Sustainable Fisheries Recognition Program will expand to include youth and women-led initiatives, reflecting Palau’s growing emphasis on inclusive environmental stewardship.
