Honorable Gibson Kanai served as the Speaker of the House of Delegates of the Republic of Palau in the Twelfth Olbiil Era Kelulau. A seasoned public servant, Speaker Kanai brings decades of experience in legislative operations, legal affairs, and public administration.
His career within the Olbiil Era Kelulau began in 1981 and has spanned a wide range of key roles, including Assistant Clerk, Legal Researcher, Director of Legal Counsel, Chief Clerk, and Budget Officer. These roles have provided him with extensive institutional knowledge and a strong foundation in governance, legislative procedure, and fiscal management.
Prior to his national service, Speaker Kanai served for sixteen years in the Ngaraard State Legislature, where he held leadership positions including Committee Chair, Floor Leader, and Speaker. He was first elected to the House of Delegates in 2008 and has since been repeatedly entrusted with leadership responsibilities, including multiple terms as Floor Leader and service on key committees such as Ways and Means and Health, Social and Cultural Affairs. During the Installation Session of the Eighth Olbiil Era Kelulau, he was appointed Floor Leader, where he expressed his vision for the nation, affirming his belief that with strong leadership, Palau will continue to move forward with unity and purpose.
Following his re-election in the 2024 National General Election, Speaker Kanai was selected by his colleagues during the 2025 Installation Session to serve as Speaker of the Twelfth Olbiil Era Kelulau. His leadership reflects a long-standing commitment to public service, effective governance, and the continued advancement of the Republic of Palau.
