Hon. Brian Melairei

Senator Brian Melairei is a first-term Senator, known for his decades of service in civil engineering, public works, and infrastructure development. With a career deeply rooted in building and maintaining the nation’s public infrastructure, he has become one of Palau’s most experienced voices in sustainable development and government operations. Senator Melairei began his career with Nishimatsu Construction before joining the Bureau of Public Works in 1993 at the urging of President Kuniwo Nakamura. Starting as a Junior Field Engineer in the Capital Improvement Project (CIP) division, he rose steadily through the ranks to become Manager of CIP and later, Director of the Bureau of Public Works. During his tenure, he led numerous infrastructure initiatives such as

the Koror-Babeldaob Resilient Urban Development Plan (2020-2030). Elected to the Senate in 2024, Senator Melairei now chairs the Committee on Capital Improvement Projects. His legislative priorities focus on strengthening the foundations of Palau’s infrastructure and governance. He is currently leading efforts to amend the national building code, modernize the procurement law, and advance container deposit-key reforms aimed at improving construction standards, promoting transparency, and enhancing environmental sustainability. Through his continued service, Senator Melairei remains committed to building a safer, more efficient, and environmentally responsible future for Palau.
