Hon. Gibson Kanai

Speaker

Delegate Gibson Kanai is a dedicated public servant whose career spans several decades in both legislative and governmental roles. After attending the College of Santa Fe in New Mexico, he returned home with a strong desire to contribute to the development of his country. Pursuing this goal, he entered the workforce and began his career on April 8, 1981, as a P.A. System Operator at the Olbiil Era Kelulau. His commitment to learning and enhancing his skills led him to hold numerous key positions within the House of Delegates, including Assistant Administrator, Administrator Officer, Assistant Clerk, Legal Researcher, and Director of Legal Counsel.

On October 30, 1995, his expertise and dedication were recognized when he was appointed Chief Clerk of the House of Delegates. He later returned to the position of Legal Counsel Director from April 8, 1997, to September 20, 2002, drawing on his in-depth knowledge of legal work and management. From December 2, 2002, to January 15, 2009, he was appointed Budget Officer of the Olbiil Era Kelulau, further showcasing his leadership and administrative skills.

In addition to his work at the national level, Delegate Kanai demonstrated a long-standing commitment to his home state of Ngaraard. He served for sixteen years in the Ngaraard Olbetibel Legislature, where he took on several significant roles, including Committee Chair, Floor Leader, and Speaker, from January 1990 to January 2006.

Delegate Kanai’s political journey at the national level began in 2008 when he was first elected to represent Ngaraard State in the House of Delegates following the National General Election. During the Installation Session, his colleagues appointed him Floor Leader of the Eighth Olbiil Era Kelulau. He expressed optimism for Palau’s future, stating, “With the able leadership of the Eighth Constitutional Government, I trust Palau will sail successfully into the future with one version.”

Re-elected in 2012, Delegate Kanai began his second term in the Ninth Olbiil Era Kelulau in 2013, where he chaired the House Committee on Health, Social & Cultural Affairs and served as a member of the Ways & Means Committee. In 2016, he was re-elected for a third term in the Tenth Olbiil Era Kelulau and was selected by his peers to serve once again as Floor Leader of the House of Delegates.

Delegate Kanai’s commitment to public service was reaffirmed when he was re-elected in the 2020 National General Election to represent Ngaraard State in the Eleventh Olbiil Era Kelulau. During the Installation Session, his colleagues once again chose him to serve as Floor Leader of the House of Delegates and as a member of several important committees, including the influential Ways & Means Committee.

On November 5, 2024, Delegate Kanai was re-elected for a fifth term in the National General Election. During the Installation Session on January 16, 2025, he was sworn in and selected by the members of the House of Delegates to serve as the Speaker of the Twelfth Olbiil Era Kelulau.
